Internet marketing and SEO gurus are all crazy about link building. You can find thousands of blog posts and articles related to “link building”, “link baiting” and so on and so on. Yes, Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. love when a site has lots of backlinks. If these links come from the powerful sites (meaning they have many backlinks too) - it’s even greater. All these strategies may work, I won’t try doubting that right now. But hey, what’s the point? Why should an average blogger think about all this stuff?
It’s simple - building a nice website with good content is not enough these days. As blogosphere frows every single second and thousands of new blogs appear every day, it is very, very hard to become succesful and build a nice set of regular visitors. Why? Because they first need to find your website somehow to become its regular readers. As search engines are now the most popular source of new visitors, it is important to rank high in their results to reveal your website to as much public as possible.
Now comes the result. You need to think about building as much links to your website as possible. And I hate thinking of link building. I hate the link building idea itself. I can’t deny it is possible to make your website successful without paying too much attention to creating more and more links, but in this case you’ll have to wait months and maybe even years for the success to come. Much time has to pass before your website becomes noticed by those who it can be interesting to. I don’t think this situation is normal.
I don’t read all these rants and articles about increasing website’s link popularity. I don’t want to spend my time on browsing the search engines trying to find the pages I can get links from to make my site just a little bit more attractive for the crawlers and rank a little bit higher. I want to put my time into what I enjoy doing and what I’m doing best (at least I hope so) - content creating.
Links are the essence of the Internet. Link building epidemy made them the evil of the Internet. I hate links as far as I need to build them in the artificial way.
